Album ‘Mens’ by Wende wins an Edison Pop Prize for Best Album 2019

On February 11, 2019 the Edison Pop prizes were awarded in the Gashouder in Amsterdam. Wende received an Edison for Best Album 2019, for her album ‘Mens’.

Jury report:

Wende Snijders is afflicted with a sort of pleasant restlessness in her work as singer and composer. The Netherlands got to know her fifteen years ago as an artist who developed the art of the chanson with taste and craftsmanship. In the years since she continued to tread her own path, indiscriminately hopping from one genre to another. Pop, rock, dance and blues: her voice seemed to fit it all. She even jumped into classical music, presenting her own special take on it. In her compositions the French language has been replaced by English and Dutch in the meantime. Particularly impressive was her own irresistible versatility, through which she managed to take her audience on an adventurous musical expedition. Her latest album ‘Mens’ was first introduced in Dutch theatres and clubs, where the musical emphasis lay on the electronics. ‘Mens’, the tour that began in 2017, later took the form of an album of the same name. Against the backdrop of a tasteful and understated decor, Wende sang purely in Dutch for the first time. She wrote most of the texts herself, but others were contributed by Dimitri Verhulst. Last year, she already received the Annie M.G. Schmidt Prize for her song ‘Voor Alles’ with a text by Joost Zwagerman. As a whole, ‘Mens’ is proof that everything Wende Snijders tries her hand at gives an exceptional result, according to the jury. The album is a current highlight in her colorful oeuvre, leaving us looking forward to its sequel.
